Keyboard shortcuts that save time

Learning a handful of reliable keyboard shortcuts reduces the need to reach for the mouse and keeps your hands on the keyboard where most work happens. The shortcuts below work across common applications and operating systems and remain consistent over time.

Universal editing shortcuts

• Ctrl (or Cmd) + C copies the current selection.
• Ctrl (or Cmd) + V pastes the copied content at the cursor.
• Ctrl (or Cmd) + X cuts the selection, removing it and placing it on the clipboard.
• Ctrl (or Cmd) + Z undoes the last action; adding Shift often redoes it.

Navigation and selection

• Ctrl (or Cmd) + A selects everything in the current document or field.
• Ctrl (or Cmd) + arrow keys move the cursor by word or paragraph instead of by character.
• Shift combined with arrow keys extends a selection without using the mouse.

Window and tab management

• Alt + Tab (or Cmd + Tab) switches between open applications.
• Ctrl + T opens a new tab in most browsers and many text editors.
• Ctrl + W closes the current tab or window.

These commands appear in Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop environments with only minor variations in the modifier key used.
